Lend Lease / Westpac Childcare Centre
Angela Ferguson was lead designer for this project. The location was chosen by the client for its ability to provide an outdoor area, however part of the indoor area was required to be designated as ‘indoor/outdoor’ space in order to adhere to BCA regulations. The floor plate was restrictive in that it was a services floor for the entire building, and sight lines were difficult to achieve due to the nature of this base building layout.
Conceptually the project steered away from ‘mickey mouse’ themes. The overarching idea was to treat the playrooms as gallery spaces, showcasing both the children and their toys and artwork. The color palette and design details were sophisticated yet simple, with high amounts of storage concealed throughout the centre.
A pick up/drop off zone was provided within the basement car park through a rear access lane, and a dedicated lift within the building ensured that the highest level of security is maintained at all times.
